Diagnostic Test According to CEFR LEVEL

Before we go into the Diagnostic test, we need to view a bit on how the students are tested under the CEFR framework.

In Malaysia, English is taught as a second language (L2) in all secondary schools. English language has four skills that should be mastered by the Malaysian secondary students. The skills are speaking, listening, reading and writing .(Cheah,2009). One of the most important skill in Malaysian secondary schools is writing. This is because writing test is always carried out to measure students language proficiency and writing is a compulsory component in all Malaysian secondary school public exams PT3 and SPM (Leong,2017).

Narrowing down to PT3 examination the writing paper is divided into two sections :

SECTIONS

QUESTIONS

Common tested writing formats

NUM OF WORD

MARKS (40%)

SECTION A

(25 minutes)

SHORT COMMUNICATIVE MESSAGE

Message writing

Informal letter writing

Writing an Email

80

20%

SECTION B

NOTE EXPANSION

Recount Writing

120

20%

Additionally, there are many kinds of writing and one of them is Recount writing.  Recount is a genre that students “tell someone about something: give an account of an event or experience”(Husna,2019.11). In teaching and learning writing especially on the lower secondary students 2019 English curriculum, the second part in the PT3 English language writing paper is a Notes Expansion question with topics on recounts .Students are demand to know how to describe a situation within 120 words by expanding the given words and make well organized content to form a good recount essay. (MoE,2019).

While marking the PT3 writing paper , four important components are tested. They are Content, Communicative Achievement, Organization and Language. Each of the components are given 5 marks (UCLES,2014) In sum, in learning writing, secondary students are required to score in all these four components in their writing.

After knowing in depth about how students will be tested under the CEFR, I started making my Diagnostic test .As I was searching online for some resources, I fond this website that enables me to download some good Diagnostic test papers that I can do with my students. The sample Diagnostic test in these websites are done based on CEFR levels as each level has different samples of Diagnostic Test.

I would love to share with teachers.
