Synectics is structured group activity in which students learn to think creatively and to solve problems through the use of analogies and metaphor’. In simple words, it refers to a creative problem-solving process where students perceive problems and solve problems in a fun and interesting way. It allows learners to ‘develop creative insight and deeper understanding of a topic by looking at it from a variety of perspectives’. There are four main assumptions that are:
1) Creativity is crucial in our daily lives
2) Creativity can be described and taught
3) Creative invention in all domains or disciplines possesses the same underlying intellectual principles.
4) Creativity is not an intensely personal experience.
Key terms and concepts pertaining to model
The key term pertaining this model is creativity since ‘the synectics strategy strongly believes in the importance of creativity’.It emphasises of learners becoming creative in terms of inventing new ways in viewing problems and expressing themselves when dealing with problems leading to solving problems differently. In short this model opens room doors for learners to think out of the box during the journey of seeking creative new ideas or solutions. There three concepts pertaining to this model that are ‘personal analogy’, ‘direct analogy’ and ‘compressed conflict’.
Personal analogy initiate ‘students to think about what it would feel like to be the chosen object and to tell why they have that particular feeling’. It means that students assume they are a certain object or they are at a certain situation and express their feeling as they become a part of it. However, direct analogy is all about making comparison between two concepts or objects as learners try to view a problem from various new angels without self involvement. Lastly compressed conflict or metaphor enables learners to do contradictions between words and the greater the contradictions the more creative students ideas and solution will be.
I made a brief on this model above is because it is related to creativity and our post is on Creative writing.Dear teachers below are a list of creative writing prompts that we can use to provide questions to students so that they can start writing.
