PICTURE- WORD INDUCTIVE MODEL (PWIM)
The PWIM is a strategy that uses an integrated language art approach to teaching beginning reading and writing, and it includes the component skills of phonetic analysis, structural analysis, spelling and mechanics’. In simple words, this model uses pictures to elicit words from students. As in, the pictures used represent objects or items that learners see in their daily life whereby the pictures are labelled part by part for students to easily recognize and refer an object. It does not only assist students in developing their vocabulary but also in learning science, mathematics and language as it permits learners to create generalizations and analysis. As Robert suggest that Besides developing students vocabulary, PWIM can also be used in other subjects such as mathematics, science and language. It allows students to make generalizations in which they will form a basis for analysis.
The key term is pictures and the main concept is inductive learning. As Robert claims that ‘it takes advantage of students prior knowledge and visual clues and builds on the key strength of inductive learning’.
The most important teaching resource for this model is pictures and plenty of pictures since this approach favours the believe that ‘the whole picture to be the starting point in learning any new concept or principle. To illustrate further, teachers can use pictures to develop vocabulary sights or also create picture dictionary.
In a nut shell, this model is the basic foundation I use to plan my writing lessons especially when using stimulus.
Dear teachers I found this website amazing because it has plenty of worksheets for using pictures to teach writing for students. It has worksheets that can be used for primary and secondary students 7-17 years old. It can even be useful for adult learners who are learning to write stories or recount.
