TEACHING SLANGS

Although CLIL seems to be a beneficial approach in Malaysian context, as mentioned above by Husin (2006), accuracy leads fluency which eventually creates less of a balance between content and language which might defeat students motive in gaining the content . Hence, I believe that CLIL approach can’t be used as the main approach yet could be integrated with the PPP method, where during the practice there is strictly language focus, and in the production part teachers can inject some content into language learning.

I integrated the CLIL teaching model because this topic is a contextualized topic and it relates to fluency which involves speaking. Slang is also apart of speaking.

In Malaysia, English is taught as a second language (L2) in all secondary schools.There are four language skills which are speaking, listening,reading and writing. From this four the most important skill is writing. 

While we teachers are hearing our students speaking we notice that they come up various kinds of slangs. 

Definition of Slang
Slang is language of an informal register that members of particular in-groups favor in order to establish group identity, exclude outsiders, or both. (Wike)


We have a lot of slangs around us and we respect each others slangs. Whenever I need to teach on Slangs I always find it hard to get materials, lesson plans and worksheets. However I found some useful websites that provides good materials, lesson plans and worksheets under the topic slangs.
