SAT ENGLISH

The key concepts in direct instruction model are that it is teacher-centered, very academic focused, limited opportunity to acknowledge students choice of learning, prefer larger groups of students rather than small groups for teaching and teaching styles or methods are focused on drilling and factual question and answering. Direct instruction has the following characteristics; an academic focus, a teacher-centered focus, little student choice of activity, use of large groups instead of small groups for instruction and use of factual questions and controlled practice in instruction’.
Role of the teacher and the learners
Direct instruction often called explicit teaching or exposition, puts heavy premium on teacher dominance’. Hence, teachers roles is that of a transmitter of information. In this model all the teacher does is give instructions, lectures and demonstratesThe students’ role is being passive learners where they do not need to construct information but can use the information readily. The teachers role is to set up the initial presentation, demonstration, case or reading material in such a way that the students can use the information readily’.
Using teaching resources To facilitate effective learning through this model, teachers need to use teaching resources to present content step by step, cater plenty of examples for students to learn new concept and skills and utilise teaching aids in conducting modelling or story telling narration.
Merit, The Direct Instruction Model has a lot of benefits in generating meaningful and effective learning in the classroom. When used appropriately, direct instruction allows ‘ mastery of academic content and skills’ as in teachers can communicate content through differentiated levels of steps from simple to complex accompanied with controlled practices that will eventually assist learners to obtain mastery of content and skills. Next, it can enhance students motivation since students are always provided with feedback that might help them reflect on their learning process. It may also be an excellent way for a teacher to communicate enthusiasm for the subject and arouse the students' interest. Lastly, this model encourages learners self –esteem since ones students have accomplished an academic goal ‘they feel empowered with a sense of accomplishment

The reason why I related this post with this teaching model is because examinations are always connected to direct instruction approach.

SAT examination is not a very hard exam especially if students have good guidance from their teachers combined with good materials to practice either on their own or with their teachers.

SAT is basically based on skills and students can even practice by enhancing their reading habits which will eventually help them with their writing.
