EASY APPROACH FOR CEFR MARKING : WRITING

* CREATED BASED ON PT3/SPM WRITING ASSESSMENT SCALES

By using these techniques Teachers can easily mark students essays. It provides a breeze in Marking :)


CEFR MARKING FOR WRITING COMPONENT IS BASED ON 4 ASPECTS:


  1. CONTENT    5 MARKS
  2. COMMUNICATIVE ACHIEVEMENT 5 MARKS
  3. ORGANISATION 5 MARKS
  4. LANGUAGE 5 MARKS
  5. total =20MARKS PER ESSAY(1/2/3)

* FOR SPM CEFR MARKING

PART 1 IS A1-B1 AND THE MIDPOINT IS A2 (SAME WITH PT3 MARKING SCALE)

PART  2 IS A2-B2 AND THE MIDPOINT IS B1 (SAME WITH PT3 MARKING SCALE)

PART 3 IS B1-C1 AND THE MIDPOINT IS B2

NOW LETS LOOK INTO THE FIRST ASPECT :

CONTENT

The total marks is 5marks

Content refers to the points given by students as answers for a question

How to allocate marks??

1) Teachers need to make sure that the points given by students are answering the question.

2) Next,teachers underline ONLY the RELEVANT points THAT ANSWERS the question and allocate (1mark) for each  point given by students.

3) Lastly,teachers need to count the total points given and use it as marks for Content.

Example:

1point relevant =1 mark 1/5

2 points relevant =2marks 2/5

3points relevant =3marks 3/5

4points relevant =4marks 4/5

5points relevant =5marks (SUCCESSFULLY ANSWERED THE QUESTION)5/5

This is a simple technique in providing marks for Content

* IF CONTENT IS=0; TEACHERS CAN STILL REWARD MARKS FOR OTHER 3 ASPECTS

CONTENT 0= OTHERS BELOW SCORE 1.


NOW LETS LOOK INTO THE SECOND ASPECT:

COMMUNICATIVE ACHIEVEMENT

The total marks is 5marks

Communicative Achievement refers to the flow of an essay.

It refers to :

Weather the essay is cohesive or not as in the logical relationships between ideas is clear and well connected. 

How to allocate marks???

1) Teachers can use the help of "Linking Words" as a guide to understand the flow of students essay.

2) Each "Linking Words" indicates the flow of each points and if used appropriately "Linking Words" can be given marks

3) Lastly teachers circle the "Linking Words" and identify the points flow and allocate "1 mark" for each "Linking Word"

Example:

1) 1 "Linking Word"=1 mark with proper flow 1/5

2) 2 "Linking Words"=2 marks with proper flow 2/5

3) 3 "Linking Words"=3marks with proper flow 3/5

4) 4 "Linking Words"=4marks with proper flow 4/5

5) 5 "Linking Words"=5 marks with proper flow 5/5

This is a simple technique in providing marks for Communicative Achievement using "Linking Words"

"Linking Words" indicates "FLOW BETWEEN POINTS"

* IF THERE ARE NO " LINKING WORDS" USED MEANING NO PROPER FLOW OF POINTS"

* Minimum mark for CA is =1 mark


NOW LETS LOOK INTO THE THIRD ASPECT:

LANGUAGE

The total marks is 5 marks

How to allocate marks???

1) Teachers can check for Tenses errors. If there are no error present;teachers can allocate "3 marks"

2) Teachers can check for Grammar errors. If there are no grammar errors present; teachers can allocate "1 marks"

3) Teachers can check for Spelling errors. If there are no spelling errors present; teachers can allocate "1 marks"

* Minimum marks for Language is = 1 mark. (If teachers identify plenty of errors;teachers can just give "1 mark"

* BONUS MARK 1 IS GIVEN FOR GOOD USE OF VOCABULARY


NOW LETS LOOK INTO THE LAST ASPECT:

ORGANISATION

The total marks is 5 marks

Organization refers to how well is the overall essay organized. Refers to Coherence. How well the points are organized .

How to allocate marks???

1) Teachers can give "1mark" if the essay has an introduction /beginning sentences 

2) Teachers can give "1mark" if the essay has a proper conclusion/end sentences 

3) Teachers can give " 3marks" if the points are arranged accordingly either in one paragraph /more using "Linking Words"

Example:

Introduction =1 mark

Conclusion = 1 mark

Point Coherence=3 marks

Total: 5 marks

* Minimum marks for Organisation is = 1 mark ( as long students have written answers)

* IF THERE ARE NO " LINKING WORDS' MEANING THE POINTS ARE NOT COHERENCE. NO 3 MARKS.
