SAMPLE MARKING SCHEME FOR SPEAKING PAPER (CEFR)

We teachers were asked to conduct speaking test (new format) with our lower and upper secondary students  Hence, we teachers came up with a sample marking scheme for the speaking paper.

Speaking paper is 25%

Total scores for speaking paper is 20 marks

The breakdown of the assessment components are:

  • Overall speaking production
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Communicative Competence

Further elaboration on each component:

1)* Overall speaking production

It refers to how well students have spoken and answered to the speaking question. Is it the best/good/weak/poor/bad.? Students MUST SPEAK!

It is a must to reward students for this component . Can't give a 0 at least 1.

  • Best : students have spoken well with many relevant points to the given question and good command of fluency.
  • Good: students have spoken with limited  points to the given question with average command of fluency
  • Weak : students have spoken with several irrelevant points to the given question with weak command of fluency.
  • Poor: students have spoken with completely irrelevant points/being repetitive to the given question and with extremely poor fluency
  • Bad: students only uttered words and didn't answer the given question

A VERY IMPORTANT COMPONENT TO EMPHASISE ON.

2) Grammar

It refers to grammar errors students make while they are speaking.

3) Vocabulary

It refers to new words students use to express their answers/ideas while speaking.

4) Communicative Competence

It refers to how confident a student is while presenting his/her speech to the examiner.

  • - speak with eye contact and confident- good (2 marks)
  • - only reading written notes- bad/poor (o marks)
  • -being repetitive with fillers (1mark)
